MD – Tax professionals warned of email phishing scam

The Comptroller of Maryland has issued a news release alerting personal income taxpayers and tax professionals about a new phishing email scam that impersonates tax software providers. The email has a subject line of “Software Support Update” and informs recipients that due to a software upgrade, the preparer must revalidate their login credentials. The link within the email leads to a website that mirrors the software provider’s login page. Tax professionals who receive emails from software providers that seek login credentials are advised to send them to their tax software providers. To report a problem, Maryland taxpayers my call 1-800-MD-TAXES or email mdcomptroller@comp.state.md.us.
